Reading Notes: Week 2 Anthology

 Pygmalion:

Story source: Ovid's Metamorphoses, translated by Tony Kline (2000).

Women are wicked and he is "offended by the failings that nature gave the female heart".

His heart is consumed by his own creation - perhaps this is love for himself.

He prayed to venus for his ivory woman.

The gods favored him.

She becomes flesh and they have a son. the end.

Ideas:

The story operates under the pretense that women are bad and the man hates women. What if, instead he meets a woman that is exactly like his statue and he must overcome his anger to be with her?

or

What if venus denies his plea because of her feeling toward women. Perhaps she demands that he does something to prove he can understand the value of a woman.
