Reading Notes: Adam and Eve, Part B
Suicide and Salvation
Source: [LIBRIVOX: 1 - LIBRIVOX: 2]
This was my favorite story from the B section of Adam and Eve.
Adam begins outside of the garden wishing for death.
He then threw himnslef down in misery and fell "like a corpse"
Then came the WORD of God that rose him up.
**words have power.**
Adam begged God to remove them from the presence of the serpent. Here I believe the serpent represents temptation.
God actually does it??
**God removed them from temptation... yet we live tempted all day every day?**
Even after all this, Adam killed himself again.
**Why would he kill himself at this point?**
Eve then killed herself so she woudent have to live without Adam.
God raised him from death by talking to him. He says that as long as Adam resides in gods will he will be safe from all the suffering.
Thoughts:
First of all, I found this a very relatable passage. The bible doesn't openly speak a lot on the topic of suicide and that has lead to a lot of ambiguity on the particular application of suicide throughout denominations. I thought it was pretty interesting how as soon as adam entered into sin he realized his life was over. This is some very powerful imagery suggesting that apart from the LORD we are apart from life.
I also loved how God used words to make things happen. We don't see a ton of this in the Tenakh but Jesus uses words in almost every instance to perform miracles. This is one of the divinding factors that cause many to believe Jesus is not the son of God. I think this could act as a practical bridge in this divide.
As far as making this my own I think I might take it in the change of perspective. I wonder what Eve was thinking throughout this whole process. She is hardly mentioned aparat from her death, yet is apparent that she is there throughout the story.
