Week 11 Story

How the Hills Turned Green

In a time long ago, the hills were scattered with colors. Blues and yellow as far as the eye can see. There was a great battle of this time. The trees, with leaves of blue spread seed as much as possible to cover the land with blue. But the grass, of yellow did much the same.

Each wanted control of the hills and valley. Each wanted to live and be amongst family. The grass and trees battled for centuries, each gaining the upper hand, only to lose it years later. This battle wore on until one day a blade of grass and a small pine tree met.

As they grew side by side they talked of the war between their people. They discussed the pain it had caused each of their families. Through this bonding, they fell in love.

As they were able to grow together, they became bonded. When it came time for each of them to spread their seed something magical happened. The pine tree and the grass changed. They became one, bonded through their love and hatred for war.

As the grass seeds began to grow it never became yellow be a deep green shade. As the pine grew it grew, not in the traditional blue, but again a deep green. Through these means the trees and the greases were able to find peace and grow together. Over time the two bonded and the hills and valleys were finally uniform.

They were covered in a deep green as far as the eye can see. In this way two families became one and were able to live together in harmony to this very day.

Authors Note:

So, I loved the theme of giving mind and will to nature as found in these tales this week. It was really fun to imagine the world developing into what it is today as a result of forces beyond humanity. I think it really adds to the mystery and beauty of nature. I love a good love story so I figured that this Romeo and Juliet type scenario might be an interesting anecdote as to how the grass and trees became the same color.

  1. Oh, this is very cool, Kev: as soon as you said blue and yellow there at the start, I could guess a little bit of what was going to happen, remembering my color-wheel from gradeschool art classes! And the idea that the mixing came from a union of love makes it even better. Wonderful! And these types of "origin" stories (sometimes called "aetiological" tales, from the Greek word aetion, meaning cause) are one of my very favorite genres of folktales. I am glad you got a chance to practice creating an aetiological story of your own here!

  2. Hi Kev, I love how you made this a happy love story. I love how you utilized how blue and yellow started and as they bonded over the shared hatred of war, there was green. Although this was about colors, I am a big Avatar, the last Airbender fan, and this story was giving me Avatar vibes. Overall, great story. I can't wait to read more of your stories.
